How to Install Claude Code Mods
A mod is a plugin, so you install it the same way: from a marketplace, or from a folder for one session. Here are the exact commands.

Before you start
- Run
claude --version. Mods need v2.1.287 or later, where they are on by default. - If you set
CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLE_FUNCTION_HOOKSduring early access, remove it. Current versions ignore it. - Mods work in the CLI and in the Code tab of the Desktop app. They don't load in Desktop WSL sessions.
claude plugin validate ./some-mod: its hooks: and calls: lines list what the mod listens to and what it asks Claude Code to do.1. Install a mod from a marketplace
Give the plugin name, an @, and the marketplace name:
# inside a Claude Code session
/plugin install token-chart@your-org
# or from your shell
claude plugin install token-chart@your-orgIf the marketplace isn't added yet, add it first. A GitHub repository is written as owner/repo:
/plugin marketplace add owner/repo
# from your shell
claude plugin marketplace add owner/repoInstalling from the shell while a session is open? Run /reload-plugins in that session, otherwise the mod loads the next time you start Claude Code. Installs go to your user scope by default; pass --scope project to enable a mod for everyone in a repository.
2. Load a mod from a folder for one session
Useful for trying a mod or developing your own. Nothing is installed:
claude --plugin-dir ./path/to/modClaude Code watches that folder and hot-reloads the mod when a file changes.
3. Try Anthropic's sample mods
Anthropic publishes three samples (Token Weather, Blast Radius and Replay Theater) in the claude-code-playground repository.
git clone https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code-playground
claude --plugin-dir claude-code-playground/claude-code/mods/token-weatherTo keep one, add the clone's claude-code/mods folder as a marketplace and install from claude-code-playground-mods. The marketplace points at your clone, so the mod stops loading if you move or delete that folder.
4. Check that it loaded
Run /plugin. A dim line under the tabs shows the count and names, such as 1 mod active · first-mod. Built-in mods aren't counted there; find them on the Installed tab under Built-in. If your mod is missing, see Troubleshoot.
Update, disable or remove a mod
- Update:
claude plugin update name@marketplace, or Update now on the Installed tab. - Disable one:
claude plugin disable name@marketplace, or use the Installed tab. - Remove:
claude plugin uninstall name@marketplace. - All mods, one session: start with
claude --safe-mode(this also disables your other customizations). - All your mods, every session: set
"disableAllHooks": truein~/.claude/settings.json. Your settings hooks and custom status line stop too.
None of these stop built-in mods; each built-in mod has its own off switch on its page.
